This award was created in 1990 and was first awarded in 1991 with the purpose of recognizing a Spencer Rotarian who has given outstanding service to all activities of the club. It was named for Marvin Kruse several years later as a tribute to the service he had given to our club and to Rotary District #5970.
Each year in November the club President asks all members to nominate a fellow member for this honor. This person should be someone who clearly demonstrates the Rotary ideals of Service, Integrity, and Leadership. In December, after all nominations have been received, a committee of past winners reviews the nominees and makes their selection. The award is presented to the winner during a regular club meeting in January.
Marvin was already a Rotarian when he moved to Spencer in 1954, and he continued his service to Rotary by becoming our club’s President that same year. He also served as our District Governor from 1979 to 1980.
Marvin was a major supporter of The Rotary Foundation (TRF). He was instrumental in encouraging other club members to become TRF supporters and pursue a Paul Harris Fellowship (recognizes individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation). He established our club’s practice of dedicating all Fines, Happy Dollars, and a portion of the new member Initiation Fee to assist new members in achieving Paul Harris Fellowship status. He also used his accumulation of foundation recognition points for this purpose.
